Sioux Falls, SD - Former teammates and members of the 2022-2023 16U team announce their Division 1 commitments.
Caleb Heil (’06) has made his decision to play his college hockey at the University of North Dakota (NCHC). In addition to his college commitment, Heil also had the privilege of representing the United States at the Hilinka Gretzky tournament in August.
The Victoria, MN native played two seasons (2021-2023) for the Sioux Falls Power 16U and was a ‘22 Phase 1 USHL draft pick of the Sioux Falls Stampede. The 6’2” goaltender will backstop the Sioux Falls Stampede this season and is a NHL draft prospect.
Heil becomes the second goaltender from the Sioux Falls POWER program to commit to UND. Hobie Hedquist (’03), who played three seasons with the 16U POWER team, is currently a freshman at North Dakota this season.
Samuel Spehar (’07), of Chaska, MN, made his college commitment to the University of Denver (NCHC) in August after an impressive debut for Team USA at the Five Nations tournament.
Spehar had 71 points in 48 games for the POWER 16U team during the ’22-’23 season and was Muskegon’s first pick in the ’23 Phase 1 USHL draft.
Heil and Spehar are the second and third players to commit to Division 1 from the ’22-’23 16U Power team following Price Grimes who committed to UNH earlier in the season.
