Carter Sanderson Announces Commitment to University of North Dakota Men’s Hockey
Sioux Falls, SD – September 13, 2024 – The Sioux Falls POWER Hockey program is proud to announce that forward Carter Sanderson has officially committed to play NCAA Division I men’s hockey at the University of North Dakota (UND). Sanderson, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward from Pierre, South Dakota, will continue his hockey journey with the prestigious Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks, ND, as part of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).
Sanderson, a standout player for the Sioux Falls Power 16U AAA team during the 2023-24 season, has impressed with his well-rounded game. His 200-foot playing style, physicality, and hockey intelligence drew the attention of UND coaches, who extended him an offer on the first day allowed for players entering their junior year of high school. Sanderson made his commitment to UND just minutes after receiving the offer.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing for North Dakota,” Sanderson said. “It’s been one of my dream schools for a while, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to play for such a historic program.”
Sanderson, who is currently playing for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the United States Hockey League (USHL), credited his development to his time with Sioux Falls Power and head coach Noelle Needham. Needham, who guided him throughout the 2023-24 season, helped shape Sanderson’s playing style by encouraging him to study players like Mark Stone of the Vegas Golden Knights.
“Carter is an unbelievable person and player,” said Needham. “He’s a leader with exceptional character, and his work ethic is unmatched. His commitment to his team, his physicality, and his ability to make plays make him a perfect fit for North Dakota’s style of play.”
During his sophomore season with Sioux Falls Power, Sanderson recorded 36 goals and 73 points in 65 games, earning recognition across the hockey world and a selection in the fourth round of the USHL Phase II Draft by Muskegon.
Sanderson’s commitment to UND marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the fourth player from South Dakota to play for the Fighting Hawks. His passion for the university’s hockey program dates back to his childhood, and his excitement to play in the famed Ralph Engelstad Arena is palpable.
“The first time I saw UND on TV, I fell in love with the rink and the organization,” Sanderson recalled. “Playing in front of 12,000 fans at Ralph Engelstad Arena is going to be an unforgettable experience.”
Carter Sanderson's dedication and leadership have been instrumental in his success, and the Sioux Falls POWER Hockey program extends its heartfelt congratulations to him on this major accomplishment.
